What started as a casual dressing room conversation cumulated with Cochrane resident Paul Cox taking it off in support of the Terry Fox Foundation.
Drop-in hockey teammates, staff and casual passersby stopped to watch his hair being sheared on Aug. 23 in the main foyer of the SLS Centre.
Cox surpassed his goal of raising $1,000 from the head shaving that started with accepting donations of $44 -- one for each year of the Terry Fox Run -- from players in an afternoon hockey scrimmage.
First to arrive was rec hockey player Randy Matthies.
"We're going to do it up right," he says. "I wish I had brought my whipper snipper."
Other teammates and SLS Centre staff members "mowed a row" under the supervision of Michel Alzukiimy, of Shears to You, 504 1 St. W.
Alzukiimy was quick to volunteer when approached by Cox.
"I didn't even think about it," he says. "He said we're going to do this, and I said I'm down, so I cancelled a couple of appointment at the shop to be here."
The 44th Annual Terry Fox Run is on Sept. 15. It's being staged by the Paul Daniels Stage in Mitford Park. There's 3, 5 and 10 k courses, all on paved pathways. It's an entirely inclusive event.
