As the summer ends, a new season brings new opportunities. For those who would like to begin autumn with a new sport or leisure activity but are not sure where to begin, an event in Morden on Wednesday (August 28th) is the perfect opportunity.

Brookelynn Wolfe, the recreation programmer for the city of Morden, invites the community to Morden’s Sport & Leisure Expo.

“Essentially, it's [an] evening where you get an opportunity to connect with local organizations,” she says.

The Expo will feature representatives from various community sports organizations, such as Morden figure skating and hockey. There will also be registration open for freestyle wrestling, pickleball, fitness classes, and yoga.

Wolfe says that registration for a few programs will go live at the Expo.

“Rec hockey and our Jr. NBA basketball program . . . both go live at 5:30 p.m. online and in person,” she says. “Last year we filled up extremely fast, so I definitely recommend being there or being online right at 5:30 to grab your spot.”

For those with an artistic streak (or those would like to cultivate one), Axent Guitar Studio and Valleyfield Music Studio will also attend the Expo, as well as the Pembina Hills Arts Council.

There will also be tables for mentorship opportunities such as Big Brothers Big Sisters for people who are passionate about forging connections and fostering a healthy community that way.

Registration will also be open for the What’s Your Story Workshop, a unique opportunity based in self-reflection.

“It's a three-hour workshop for anyone who . . . wants to tell their life story with words and images,” says Wolfe. “There's two different workshop leaders, Amanda [Le Rougetel] and Deborah [Schnitzer]. They come from Winnipeg, and they are educators and published writers. They just bring you through different creative prompts and help you to tell your life story.”

Wolfe says that the attendees of last year’s workshop had a valuable experience.

"Everyone seemed to enjoy it,” she says. “It felt like a really special workshop to enjoy with everybody who was there.”

Regardless of what type of activity one is drawn to at the Expo, there will be opportunities to get involved in the community for everyone — all ages are welcome.

Morden’s Sport & Leisure Expo will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Access Event Centre. For more information and a complete list of the organizations that will attend, click here.
