Two Morden Police officers on patrol during Friday at Morden Corn and Apple Festival

It was a busy weekend for Morden police officers.

Starting Thursday, police were called to a local establishment regarding a man threatening people with a knife. He was arrested without incident, and officers found a knife in his pocket. The man was brought to local a healthcare facility for further assessment. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Officers responded to additional disturbances at local businesses in the following days.

On Saturday, police were flagged down by security at a local establishment who reported that a man had just assaulted someone with a weapon. The man fled on foot, but was taken into custody after a short pursuit, and the weapon was found by police. The 26-year-old was arrested and released on an undertaking with a November court date.

One person was arrested for assault and mischief after his ex-girlfriend called police, reporting he had punched and kicked her, and broke her window. He was released the next day on an undertaking to attend court in November.

Another man was arrested after police were called to a disturbance at a home shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday morning. Police also knew the suspect to be on conditions to not attend the victim’s home and have no contact with the victim.

Then at 2:30 a.m., police were dispatched to a group of people fighting on 8th Street. Officers learned two women had been assaulted by two men, who had since left the area. However, the K-9 unit tracked down the two suspects, and they were taken into custody and arrested for assault. The pair was later released on undertakings to attend court in November.

Meanwhile, Chief Brad Neduzak noted during this year's Festival, like last year, four officers from Winkler Police Service worked throughout the weekend in the city to look after traffic duties exclusively. This was proposed and approved for funding these extra officers through MPI and the enhanced enforcement programs. Morden officers attended the Winkler Harvest Festival to provide traffic services, as well. Neduzak noted this certainly helps with the weekend workload and allows Morden officers to attend other calls for service.
