The Town of Ponoka is implementing a traffic control plan to ensure pedestrian and vehicle safety during the 2024 World Chuckwagon Finals this week.

“With high volumes of traffic expected during the World Chuckwagon event, the town is committed to helping ensure the safety of our residents and visitors with these temporary traffic control measures,” said Kevin Ferguson, Ponoka Mayor.

Traffic control measures will be in effect today (Aug. 28) until Sept. 1 at the following times:

  • From 5 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 28 and Aug. 29

  • From 2 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 30

  • From 9 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1

The traffic speed limit along Highway 53, beginning east of Highway 2A and ending at 46 Street will be reduced to 30 km.

Access to Highway 53 will be closed to traffic at 54 Street. Local traffic and users of the Ponoka Arena Complex will still have access to 54 Street.

RCMP will monitor and help direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic at crossings on Highway 53 during peak traffic volume periods as needed to ensure public safety.

The town reminds drivers to watch for pedestrians and be mindful of temporary traffic controls and signage.

Ponoka residents are encouraged to consider alternate routes to avoid heavy traffic during the World Chuckwagon event.
