The Winkler Flyers have hired Matt Melo as their new head coach and general manager. Melo replaces Justin Falk who stepped down earlier this month after three seasons with the hockey club to pursue a pro position. Falk guided the Flyers to their first Manitoba Junior Hockey League championship in 26 years this past spring. Melo spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach with the Western University Mustangs in London, Ontario. The defending Turnbull Cup champions will begin main camp on Saturday. The Flyers first pre-season game is Friday, September 6th at home against the Steinbach Pistons. 


Basketball player Patrick Anderson of Fergus, Ontario and swimmer Katarina Roxon of Kippens, Newfoundland & Labrador will serve as Canadian flag-bearers at the Paralympics. The opening ceremony is set for today in Paris. Canada's team includes 126 athletes from 18 different sports. Two Manitoba athletes are in Paris. Leanne Taylor will compete in Para Triathlon and Bethany Johnson in Wheelchair Basketball. Competition continues through September 8th. Canadian athletes won 21 medals including five gold at the Tokyo Paralympics. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes win streak has reached four games. Landen Bourassa scattered eight hits and struck out nine over seven innings as the Fish defeated the Gary SouthShore RailCats 3-1 Tuesday night at Blue Cross Park. Miles Simington had two hits and scored two runs for the Goldeyes who lead the American Association's West Division by a half game over the second place Sioux Falls Canaries. Winnipeg is a game-and-a-half ahead of the third place Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks. The Goldeyes have five games left in the regular season schedule. 


Tammy Gibson is the low Manitoban heading into round two of the Canadian Women's Senior Golf Championship at The Club at North Halton in Georgetown, Ontario. Gibson was 10-over par 82 Tuesday and is 13 shots back of first round leader Ellen Port of Sunset Hills, Missouri. 11-time Manitoba champion Rhonda Orr opened with an 83; Lisa Benson was 89; Fran Povoledo was 90; Mary Turner was 92 and Susan Wright-Cassan was 93.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have added National defensive back/linebacker Lourenz Bowers to the practice roster. The Blue Bombers (5-6) have won three games in a row and face the CFL's West Division leading Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-5-1) in the annual Labour Day Classic on Sunday (6 p.m.) at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.
