Alberta Health is monitoring an emerging E. coli outbreak at a child-care facility in Blackfalds.

On Aug. 23, Alberta Health Services (AHS) raised an alert when a child who attended an Aspen Lakes Discovery Centre facility tested positive for Shiga-toxin producing E. coli (STEC).

An outbreak was declared the same day when multiple individuals who attended the facility had presented with symptoms.

As of Aug. 27, three children and one staff member who attended the facility have tested positive for STEC.

AHS Environmental Public Health is leading an investigation into the outbreak and working with the facility to reduce the chance of further transmission, including reviewing cleaning, sanitation, and isolation protocols.

AHS is following up with 161 people who are considered exposed.

The source of the infection is currently unknown.
