Swift Current’s new NDP candidate announced his campaign and laid out his platform last night at the Lyric Theatre.

The New Democratic Party of Saskatchewan has selected Jay Kimball to represent them in the upcoming election. Jay Kimball has been living in Swift Current since February, 2023, and is originally from a farm near Rockglen. He hopes to fight the carbon tax, increase education funding and improve the cost of living.

“I want to get Saskatchewan out of last place in healthcare and education,” said Kimball. “Our wait times and our hospitals are in a crisis situation. I want to be a strong voice for the community of Swift Current, and I want to keep the issues that are keeping my neighbours up at night around cost of living, healthcare, and education in focus.”

The 44-year-old is self-employed in the field of visual arts with a focus on pottery and has spent time on several boards such as the Thomson Community Council, and was employed with the Sask. Arts Board. He has three children, and his partner is currently the director of the Swift Current Art Gallery.

“I believe strongly in the Saskatchewan NDP; Carla Beck's team that she's made,” stated Kimball. “I'm hearing on the doorsteps and from everybody that I've met, that they're ready for change... I’ve always been interested in the public sector, and I feel that this is a great moment for me to meet the community and help make that change happen, that everybody wants so desperately.”

Kimball also explained that the NDP is planning to implement a task force for frontline health workers intended to improve the working conditions and employee retention. The new candidate is looking forward to knocking on doors, hosting events and advocating around the community.
