On Tuesday night, an Estevan woman was arrested after being caught driving 154 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. The incident occurred on Highway 39 between Hitchcock and Macoun.

Following a failed roadside breath test, she was taken to the station, where she refused to provide further breath samples.

“When a demand is made of an individual based on reasonable grounds, they don’t have the ability to say no I’m not going to participate in that process. If they choose not to provide samples, the consequences effectively end up being the same as if they were both charged and convicted of impaired driving,” explained Interim Chief Warren Morrical.

As a result, the woman’s license was suspended indefinitely, and her vehicle was impounded.

“The refusal of an individual to provide a breath sample is in and of itself an offence under the Criminal Code. So, the penalty for being convicted of that is identical to if an individual had been convicted of impaired driving or exceeding 80 milligrams per cent of blood alcohol content,” added Morrical.

The woman was lodged in cells until sober and is scheduled to appear in court in October.
