With the reopening of First Avenue north, some may be wondering what's happening with the traffic lights at the intersection of Government Road, as it is still being operated as a four-way stop.
Director of Engineering with the City of Weyburn, Renee Cugnet, said First Avenue will resume the week of September 9th, due to delays with suppliers for the signal heads and detection cameras, as well as contractor crew scheduling.
"Can Traffic is the contractor that's doing the traffic lights, and they do work all around the province, so they have to try to work in our location with their schedule as well as try to align that with SaskPower and with the supply of the equipment," she explained. "Unfortunately, things just didn't line up there as we had hoped, so it should be done though by the second week of September."
While there has always been a four-way stop at the intersection of 16th Street at First Avenue, traffic lights will also be going in there, with work already having been underway this summer.
"Concrete bases are installed already over there, and they should be done by the end of September," Cugnet noted.
"So, by the end of September, we'll have two new sets of traffic lights along First Avenue, and both of those two new traffic signal lights are going to have detection cameras which will allow for smoother traffic flow."
She shared the reason the City wasn't able to begin the installation of the traffic lights at the 16th Street intersection at the same time as Government Road.
"We were waiting for the SGI Traffic Safety Funding, and that wasn't announced until the end of July, so that was just why we weren't able to do them both at the same time. That would have been ideal, but it's very exciting that we got funding from the provincial government to be able to help us with that traffic light at 16th Street."
First Avenue is also a busy trucking thoroughfare, Highway 13, and the new camera sensors will allow for trucks to keep moving through instead of having to stop at timed lights when traffic is less busy on the cross streets.
