The Altona Bisons defeated the Cartwright Twins 9-5 Wednesday night at Waldie Field. That cuts the Twins lead in the Border Baseball League's best-of-five final to two games to one. Game four goes tonight (7 p.m.) at Access Field.


Evan Alexander was a home run away from hitting for the cycle and Dayson Croes had three hits and drove in three runs as the Winnipeg Goldeyes downed the Gary SouthShore RailCats 8-4. The Fish (54-41) lead the American Association's West Division by a game-and-a-half over the second place Sioux Falls Canaries. Winnipeg is two games ahead of the third place Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks. The Goldeyes, who have won five in a row, will wrap up the regular season schedule with a four-game series against the Lincoln Saltdogs which starts Friday at Blue Cross Park. 


Four Manitobans made the cut and will play in today's final round of the Canadian Women's Senior Golf Championship at The Club at North Halton in Georgetown, Ontario. Rhonda Orr (83, 82) and Tammy Gibson (82,83) are in a tie for 29th place at plus 21. Lisa Benson (89, 87) and Susan Wright-Cassan (93,83) got in on the cut line at plus 32. Mary Turner (92, 91) and Fran Povoledo (90, 98) failed to make the cut. Terrill Samuel of Etobicoke, Ontario has the 36-hole lead at minus one. 


The Paris Paralympics are officially underway. Patrick Anderson and Katarina Roxon served as Canadian flag-bearers at the opening ceremony. Dozens of Canadian athletes, coaches and staff marched from the Champs-Elysees into Place de la Concorde. The Paralympics continue through September 8th.
