"I think the league's wide open this year and, you know, we won't know until we start playing the regular season, and [it's] probably after Christmas until we know who's a real contender," noted Jason Tatarnic, head coach of the Estevan Bruins.

Wide open. That seems to be the team's mindset heading into preseason action before the start of the SJHL season. With notable acquisitions made in the off-season, Tatarnic and the Bruins coaching staff are looking to add depth to their lines. He admits that the team is young this season and they've only got a handful of returning players.

"I know we got our main camp coming up this weekend and our guys have been here since the hockey school, so they've been on the ice doing some sessions. Then, we'll put some guys in the lineup on Wednesday and let them go at it."

Their preseason schedule has been confirmed, with the MJHL's Virden Oil Capitals being their first contest next Wednesday at home. The black-and-gold are heading across the border shortly after to face the North American Hockey League's Aberdeen Wings for a double-header weekend. To cap off their preparation, a home-and-home weekend with their Highway 39 rival Weyburn Red Wings will be their final contest before the regular season.

"Vernon, we've seen them a few times now in preseason. And then also, Weyburn's obviously no stranger - we see them a little bit later on. Aberdeen's a brand new opponent. They'll be a tough team to play in their home rink. They'll be a pretty experienced team, so we'll have our work cut out," Tatarnic added.

The Bruins are ready to start a new chapter ahead of the upcoming SJHL regular season. The Melville Millionaires will start the regular season for Estevan at Affinity Place on September 20.
