A new school year is on the horizon with many opening their doors at the start of September.

The Estevan Comprehensive School is preparing for the new year with plenty of students coming back to their halls.

Principal James Jones says that he's ready to see them return to the school for the new academic year.

"We're super excited to welcome back our new and returning students to the camp. There's lots of excitement and there's always that kind of nervous energy to start an academic year."

Plenty of work has gone into the new year with Jones saying that teachers have been especially busy.

"Classroom teachers are always in their classroom this week preparing. But many teachers have been over the course of the summer doing the work necessary to prepare to meet those students. We're very excited and we have some new staff that are joining us this year. So we're welcoming them and getting them established here in the building."

Jones says he's thrilled to see new staff members coming in who will help to bring new perspectives to the school.

"I think new staff members create an opportunity for new ideas and new perspectives. So I think it's definitely a great opportunity for our staff and for our community. We're looking forward to another musical this year and looking forward to all of those things, the extracurricular involvement of our students and celebrating the successes of so many of our students that do awesome things here in our building."

With the province-wide cell phone ban coming into effect many schools around the province have introduced plans to deal with the changes.

For Jones that policy won't be a huge departure for previous years at the ECS.

"I don't think there's going to be too major of changes. There's definitely going to be that expectation that students are not using those cell phone devices during instructional time and definitely we'll have to work with our students and our community to make sure that they understand those guidelines and expectations.

"When you rule anything out new, we definitely need to take some time and make sure that we're explicitly teaching that and helping our students to understand the importance of that policy. So there's work to be done, but I know that our students will rise to the occasion and be OK with it."

Ahead of the school opening up the ECS will host its annual locker night, giving students and parents a chance to go to the school and prepare for the year.

"Tonight, we're hosting our annual load the locker night. So, our school community council is going to be serving up free hot dogs," said Jones. "There'll be complementary water as well. We'll be meeting our students, providing them with timetables, and giving those students an opportunity just to tour around the building, introduce themselves to classroom teachers, and see some of the extracurricular and sports clubs that are available here at the comp."
