The Rubber Duck Race & Family Fun Carnival debuted in 2023 and seemed like an instant hit.

The Simpora Foundation's Rubber Duck Race & Family Fun Carnival is making a return for its second year.

It's a fundraiser for the non-profit, which provides sponsorships for local athletes and sports teams.

The foundation's director, Roanne Bodnarchuk, says their goal is to support athletes not only through scholarships but also by immersing them in their community.

"The Simpora Foundation was created to immerse local athletes into their community. So in order to receive sponsorship, we ask that any group or individual completes a kindness project for the community to donate their time back so that it's a give and take."

Simpora premiered its duck race and carnival last year, and despite some gusty winds, it saw an enthusiastic turnout.

This year's event is scheduled for September 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ethel Tucker Centennial Park in Okotoks.

It'll include carnival games and traditional carnival food, as well as a dunk tank featuring local celebrities such as Mayor Tanya Thorn and members of municipal enforcement and Okotoks Fire & Rescue.

Special guests will include Calgary Stampede First Nations Princess Margaret Hollaway and Calgary Stampede Princess Brooke Fielding, as well as mascots from the Okotoks Dawgs and Okotoks Oilers.

As for the main event, the rubber ducks will be launched by the mascots from the Sheep River Bridge at 12:00 p.m., where they'll race to the Laurie Boyd Bridge.

A handful of volunteers will be waiting at the finish line to collect the ducks and take note of the winners.

Cash prizes will be awarded for first place ($2,000), second place ($1,000), third place ($500), and last place ($500).

Bodnarchuk says last year's race was a big hit.

"The first duck really got out in front of everyone else and finished in 10 to 15 minutes, and there were some stragglers at about 20 minutes or so... We were pleasantly surprised at just how many people just sat by the riverbank and watched all the ducks float by, it's quite cool to watch."

Duck adoptions are open on the Simpora Foundation website, and they'll be available at an upcoming Okotoks Oilers game and the Okotoks Bisons golf tournament.

Tickets and sponsorship packages are also available.
