On Thursday, August 29, 2024, the Winkler Senior Centre hosted its Annual Fundraiser BBQ, an event designed to support the centre's operating expenses and to bring the community together for a night of delicious food and social engagement. Held in the Multipurpose Room, attendees enjoyed a menu of homemade burgers, baked beans, coleslaw, and ice cream, all on a "by donation" basis.

"We do the BBQ annually to keep our meal prices down for people who can't pay too much... we do a lot of work with grants, but not everything is covered, so we have to do that," said Peter Wieler, Winkler Senior Center Board Chair.

The annual BBQ is essential as the funds support the Winkler Senior Centre's programs and services. By keeping costs low, the centre aims to ensure that its activities remain accessible to everyone in the community. The BBQ also served as an opportunity to share information about the centre's fall programs, with registration details available for those interested in participating in upcoming events.

"This event builds community, brings people together, and meets their social, emotional, physical, and intellectual needs so that we can keep our seniors healthy, vibrant, and active in the community," said Nettie Dyck, Winkler Senior Center Executive Director.

The fundraiser highlighted the diverse range of programs offered at the Winkler Senior Centre, catering to various interests and needs of the senior community. These programs include a Morning Coffee Corner, fitness classes, floor curling, pickleball, line dancing, and guest speakers presenting on topics relevant to seniors. The centre's activities are designed to promote social engagement,  physical wellness, and provide valuable information and resources for its members.

The evening was more than just a fundraiser, it was a celebration of community spirit, with board members, volunteers, and staff working together to create a welcoming atmosphere.
