The principal of Weyburn Comprehensive School, Renee Cuthbert, said the school's cell phone policy will change as the new academic year approaches.

"Students will not be able to use their phones in class. There are some exceptions, which would fall into some teacher use, where they've been authorized to do so for instructional purposes in Grades nine through 12."

Cuthbert explained that while this adjustment is significant, it builds on the existing policy.

"So this is not new in many ways, but it is an adjustment to the cell phone policy that's been in place in the past years as indicated in our handbook, which is being updated and should be ready for viewing on our website."

She emphasized the school's commitment to working with students and parents to ensure smooth implementation.

"The school will continue to work with the students and the parents through conversations, education, and progressive consequences to correct behaviours that don't align with that policy."

Cuthbert said the policy is in place for one main reason.

"The policy intends to reduce distractions. As for how it impacts student learning, classroom dynamics will be different for each classroom. It'll be a bit of an organic process."

As far as it goes for parents to get a hold of their child during school hours, they can still phone the school, and the office will make sure to get a hold of the student.

"Students will also have access to their phones before school, during breaks, and lunch."

Cuthbert noted she is very excited about the upcoming school year and cannot wait for the students to be back in the building.
