With the start of the school year, Cochrane RCMP are reminding everyone to do their part to keep the roadways safe for students and staff as they head back to class.
Cst. Clayton Gelinas says drivers need to slow down and obey the signs when near schools.
"One of the biggest things that they need to be aware of is observing the school zone speeds because for so long we haven't been at school and we may have forgot. It is 30 km/h in school zones."
Be mindful of pedestrians. There are more children walking, biking, and being dropped off in school zones. Some kids may be running late and might suddenly dash into the street without looking.
He reminds drivers that it's the law for them to stop when students are loading and unloading from a school bus.
"If you see red, alternating flashing lights and that stop sign is out, you have to stop for that school bus. The reason of course is for the safety of the children when they exit the school bus or enter into the school bus to give them room for movement."
Police are also reminding students to avoid distractions when walking to school. Things like putting away electronics and ear buds and focusing on their surroundings to help make the commute safer.
RCMP and Municipal Enforcement will be out ensuring drivers are keeping kids safe on the roads.
