As students return to school, Estevan can expect to see a noticeable increase in both pedestrian and vehicle traffic, prompting police to urge drivers to exercise extra caution, especially in school zones where children may be less attentive.
Warren Morrical, Interim Chief of the Estevan Police Service, highlighted the need for vigilance as children may be distracted on their way to and from school. "We ask that drivers prioritize the safety of kids as they make their way back to school. Adhering to speed limits and being aware of children in the area is crucial. Drive defensively to ensure everyone's safety."
Morrical also addressed the police's focus within the schools. He mentioned that while there was previously a school resource officer dedicated to working in all schools, the position was provincially funded and the funding has since been reallocated. "Currently, our members make daily contact with the schools. Our frontline officers are tasked with conducting walkthroughs, giving presentations, and staying engaged with what's happening both in the schools and school zones."
By having patrol officers regularly visit the schools, the police aim to maintain a strong presence and keep a close eye on school safety, despite the absence of a dedicated resource officer.
