The search for a new Chief of Police in Weyburn is over. In a release issued Friday morning, the City of Weyburn confirmed interim Chief, Brent VanDeSype, will take step into the role effective September 1st.

"We are thrilled to have Interim Police Chief VanDeSype step into the role of Police Chief," said Ron McCormick with the Weyburn Police Commission in the release. "His leadership during his time as Deputy Police Chief and Interim Police Chief has been outstanding, and we are confident that he will continue to strengthen the Weyburn Police Service."

The release added that the transition from interim to permanent Chief of Police reflects the city's confidence in his ability to lead the Weyburn Police Service.

VanDeSype's policing career started with the RCMP, where he was originally posted to Watrous. He would then be posted to the Forensic Identification Unit in Saskatoon before joining the Weyburn Police Service in 2007.

The official swearing-in ceremony for VanDeSype will take place at noon on September 5th outside the council chambers at City Hall.

VanDeSype, who has been the deputy police chief since January 2021, took on the role of interim chief earlier this month after Jamie Blunden resigned from the role to take the job as Estevan's police chief.
