The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are 6-6 and tied for first place in the CFL West with the B.C. Lions. The Bombers, who started the season 0-4, held on for a 35-33 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the 59th Labour Day Classic Sunday in Regina. Riders kicker Brett Lauther’s 60-yard field goal attempt for the win on the final play of the game was short. Winnipeg led 29-14 at halftime. Backup quarterback Chris Streveler had two short touchdown runs; Nick Hallett recovered a fumbled punt in the Riders end zone and Zach Collaros found Nic Demski with a 34-yard td pass. Collaros suffered a hit to the helmet late in the first half and did not return. Linebacker Adam Bighill left the game with a lower body injury with three minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Bombers and Roughriders will meet in the Banjo Bowl Saturday in Winnipeg.


The Altona Bisons meet the Cartwright Twins today (3 p.m.) at Waldie Field in the fifth and deciding game of the Border Baseball League final. The Twins won the first two games of the series. The Bisons took games three and four.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped a 4-1 decision to the Lincoln Saltdogs. The Fish, who clinched first place in the American Association’s West Division on Saturday, will play their regular season finale today (1 p.m.) against the Saltdogs at Blue Cross Park.


Canadian swimmer Aurelie Rivard won her second medal in the pool at the Paris Paralympics. The Quebec native, who captured bronze in the 50-metre freestyle on opening night, finished second in the 100 metre freestyle on Sunday. Wheelchair racer Brent Lakatos of Quebec captured silver. Canadian athletes have won six medals through four days of competition...including four silver and two bronze.
