The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings played their annual Red & White Game to close out training camp on Monday afternoon. The sizable crowd in attendance saw some of the top prospects for the coming season and a few veterans to the lineup playing a fast-paced competitive game that ended with Team Red taking home the Eric Calibaba & Friends Cup with a 5-3 win.

“We had some good, local products in the game here tonight,” said Red Wings head coach Cody Mapes after the game, before he started his meetings with players. “It was good to see a kid like Nick Forsyth get in, and always a good end to the night with the Calibaba family being here.”

While training camp was four days of drills, scrimmages, and the Red & White Game, the hard part of the preseason starts now for Mapes and the coaching staff as they start determining the roster for the 2024-25 campaign.

"Definitely, the next few weeks are tough, but the more difficult the decisions, that usually means you’re going to be more competitive, so we welcome those decisions and we’re excited to see what the guys bring here over the next few weeks,” Mapes added.

Those next few weeks will include practices as well as a slate of five exhibition games, which starts Friday night when the Melville Millionaires come to town. The Red Wings will then travel to Melville for a return game on Saturday.

Next Tuesday, the Notre Dame Hounds are at Crescent Point Place, followed by a visit by the Estevan Bruins on September 13th. The preseason schedule finishes up with a game in Estevan against the Bruins on the 14th.

The regular season for the Red Wings will open on September 20th in Yorkton, with a game against the Terriers. Yorkton will then come down on September 22nd for the Red Wings home opener.

You will be able to listen to all of the Red Wings road games again this year on Red Wing Radio, Country 106.7, with the voice of the Red Wings, Dylan Feissel.
