Morden has been busy getting streets and sidewalks ready for back to school in the west end of the city.

Mayor Nancy Penner said drivers should watch out for a new three-way stop at the corner of Gilmour and 19th Streets.

“So, we realize that intersection is getting busier with cars going back and forth to the Co-op grocery store, with the opening of the daycare at the corner of Wardrop and Manchester that will be opening soon. There'll be traffic and I'm sure the daycare may be doing day excursions to Lions Park. The neighborhood is growing, with residential development on Manila St. more traffic is expected at the corner of Gilmour and 19th. Public safety is important to the city, so hence the three-way stop sign.”

In addition to the new sidewalk and three-way stop, Penner said a tender has been awarded for the creation of a gravel pathway.

“On the westside, behind 19th St. there will be a gravel path. We're just graveling it this year because of the cost, and it will connect Manchester up to the Ecole Discovery Trails bringing the kids to Park Hill. So, that will provide a nice safe active transportation pathway for kids and adults and whoever to connect.”

Two new crosswalks were also installed. One on Parkhill and the other on Gilmour near Lions Park.

Mayor Penner said with the tree canopy playing an important role in the community, she was pleased maybe only one tree needed to be removed when constructing the Gilmour St sidewalk.
