A new chapter in affordable housing is being built in Winkler, with the announcement of a 28-unit apartment building at the corner of North Railway and Main Street. Central Community Homes – a charitable not-for-profit organization is spearheading the project in collaboration with the City of Winkler, and Kblock Developments in an effort to address the growing need for affordable housing in the community.

The building is set to rise on the site of the former Reitze home yard, a location that will offer residents walkable access to schools, shopping, parks, and medical clinics. Board Chair of Central Community Homes in Winkler – James Friesen spoke about the building in more detail.

“We’ve identified that there’s a huge need for one and two-bedroom apartments, and so most of the units... will try to address that demographic.”

Though Central Community Homes has leverages support from the Province and the City of Winkler via a municipal grant, Friesen highlights that there is still a funding gap that needs to be closed.

“We need to close the gap on about one million dollars... we’ll be putting out a specific fundraising campaign in the next while... [but] anyone wanting to get more information about the project, or ways to contribute can contact Brad.”

As demolition of the site has begun, Friesen confirmed that the goal for the new development’s completion is to be able to have the doors open to the public for fall of 2025.
