A bike crash dashed para triathlete Stefan Daniel's hopes of medaling at the Paris Paralympics on Sept. 2.

Ranked number one heading into the games, Daniel was in the lead of the men's PTS5 event when he ran into a barricade and was knocked out of contention.

There were high hopes of him winning gold to add to his silver and bronze medals from the last two Paralympics.

At the 2016 Rio games, Daniel became the first Canadian to podium in para triathlon. In Toyko three years ago, he won bronze.

Daniel is a five-time world champion and eight-time world medalist.

Para triathlon is a 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike and 5k run.
