The first-ever REBOOT trauma recovery program in Western Canada is being brought to the area by Veteran Hunters.
REBOOT is a free 12-week, faith-based, peer-led course that helps first responders and their families heal from critical incident stress and trauma.
It begins Sept. 23 and continues weekly until Dec. 16. You can attend in person at Brentwood Village 4039 Brentwood Rd. NW in Calgary or online, or, depending upon your schedule, a blend of both.
A meal is provided and there's free childcare available at the same location.
Todd Hisey, founder and CEO of the Cochrane-based Veterans Hunters says Calgary was selected for the in-person sessions because it's a more central location to attract people from across the region.
Hisey says if you or someone you love is suffering from the stress from the front lines, the time is now to break free from trauma and change your life.
Todd took the peer-led program and believes it works quicker than traditional approaches to mental healthcare. A successful government grant application made it possible to be offered.
"It addresses the issues related to trauma from a family setting and how that impacts both the responder and his spouse.
"There's still a lot of stigmas attached to people trying to get trauma recovery. There's still a lot of career implications for first responders and for military members. That's why a peer-led program works really well. There are no career implications for the responders to come and attend, plus they're hearing from a peer."
The Hiseys have been through a number of years of trauma recovery both formally and informal related to Todd's 22 years of service as an officer with the Canadian Army. The couple will be leading the group discussions.
More than 20,000 people have participated in the program across in two Canadian provinces, 43 American states, and 11 countries.
The mission of Veteran Hunters is to provide veterans and first responders with therapeutic hunting, fishing & outdoor adventures designed to expand mindfulness and peer-to-peer healing.
