Gordon Wesley started work on his mural at the Arts and Learning Campus this week.

A new mural is underway at Okotoks' Arts and Learning Campus.

Gordon Wesley was selected to paint an Indigenous-themed mural on the building's east wall facing east toward the former Okotoks library, and got started this week.

Wesley is a Stoney Nakoda artist from the Bighorn Reserve just east of the Rockies, which often serve as a backdrop for his artwork.

An accomplished canvas painter, Wesley says he's also no stranger to painting murals.

"I did one for Banff, just outside the Cave and Basin. There are boxes with murals from different artists. I was part of the first group... And then last year I did one for Canmore, inside the civic centre."

His latest mural will feature bison that would have once crossed the Sheep River in the area and a group of tipis in the distance.

Wesley has yet to name it.

"I haven't named it yet, but it'll come along later. The application called it a 'Respect for the Land' mural."

His mural is one of several new public art pieces planned for Okotoks this year, with a full list available on the Town's website.
