Highways and railroads serve important roles in keeping Saskatchewan's economy afloat.

Saskatchewan is celebrating Transportation Week, taking a look at all of the good done by transportation workers around the province.

That includes trains, planes, and vehicles that help to move people, goods, and commodities that carry the province forward.

Minister of Highways Lori Carr says that it's important to respect and pay attention to transportation.

"I mean transportation in a province like Saskatchewan that's landlocked is super important. We have all of our railroads and our roads that have intersections that cross each other. So I think it's really important for individuals, you know, you're waiting at your train isn't fun sometimes, but looking both ways, stopping when the lights are flashing and ensuring that it's safe to go when it's clear is paramount."

In areas that are far away transportation helps to connect different communities through both commerce and movement of people.

"The Saskatoon Transportation Club is proud to celebrate the outstanding individuals who drive the transportation industry forward in Saskatchewan," Saskatoon Transportation Club President Robert Skarzynski said. "This proclamation highlights the essential role transportation plays in connecting our communities and fueling our economy."

With a recent rail stoppage creating a major problem for transportation, Carr says that's an indicator that transportation is a key part of the province's economy.

"I think it highlighted even for the average individual that was maybe watching the news and didn't realize that. 'Ohh, you know what? My strawberries may not get here and if they do get here, they're probably going to cost me three times as much because the supply is so low.' So transportation plays a vital role in this province."

This year's Highways budget of $741 million will fund improvements to more than 1,100 kilometres of the provincial highways network.
