The Province of Saskatchewan, in collaboration with the Saskatchewan Music Educators Association (SMEA), has officially proclaimed Friday, September 13, 2024, as Music Education Day. This special day highlights the critical role music educators play in shaping the lives of students and the broader community through the power of music.
“Music Education Day is a time to celebrate the invaluable contributions of music educators across the province,” said Sharon Bates, President of the SMEA. “Their work ensures that individuals of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to participate in music programs, enriching their lives and enhancing the cultural fabric of our society.”
Minister of Education Jeremy Cockrill echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the multifaceted benefits of music education. “The Government of Saskatchewan recognizes music education as a crucial part of a child’s learning journey,” said Cockrill. “Music education not only enhances academic performance but also fosters social skills, creativity, self-expression, confidence, discipline, and teamwork. I extend my gratitude to the SMEA for demonstrating that music education is not just about learning music; it’s about learning through music.”
Research supports the numerous advantages of music education, showing that students involved in music programs are more likely to stay engaged in school, set and achieve goals, and improve their language, reading, and coordination skills. Additionally, music education has been linked to the development of critical thinking abilities.
Founded in 1957, the SMEA is a charitable, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting high standards of music and music education throughout Saskatchewan. As a recognized “Professional Growth Network” by the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation, the SMEA serves as a vital advocate for music educators, ensuring that music remains a vibrant and integral part of the educational landscape in the province.
