NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has ripped up the supply and confidence deal with the Liberal party. His decision was announced in a social media video on Wednesday, saying Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had been notified of the decision.
Robert Kitchen, MP for Souris Moose-Mountain, describes his initial reaction saying “it's quite a stunt that he's playing. The one thing that seems to be evident is that he's trying to showcase, and find ways to gain back some support that he's been losing.”
Kitchen says this decision won’t necessarily result in an election right away, the organization of the House will simply revert back to how it was prior to the deal being signed.
“People need to realize that all that he's done is basically put us back into what should have happened back in 2021, when the election was. We were in a minority government situation, where it would be a case-by-case type situation.”
Having lost the guaranteed support of the NDP, Kitchen says the Liberal party’s support in session depends on if they are backed by the Bloc. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean it will be easier to find support for the Conservatives. He says it depends on the Liberal party’s next course of action.
“You look in the polls and they're way down. What are they going to do? They've quadrupled the carbon tax such that it's added 61 cents per litre. Those numbers have just added tremendously onto the backs of Canadians. How are they going to justify it? It's going to be a huge challenge to see what they do.”
“There will hopefully be opportunities where we can catch them on something that will allow us to find a confidence motion that we can defeat them on.”
