Daniel Henry Schmitz
April 2, 1954 – September 4, 2024

It is with profound sadness that the family of Daniel “Dan” Henry Schmitz of Watson, SK, announces his death on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, SK.  He was 70 years of age.  Dan was born in Watson on April 2, 1954. He completed Grade 12 at St. Peter's College in Muenster, SK, and continued his education at SAIT in Calgary, AB. On September 5, 1975, Dan married Mary Lou Ruddy and together they did volunteer work before moving to Edmonton, AB, in 1984. Dan had several careers over his lifetime, including working as a graphic artist, massage therapist, teaching guitar lessons, and a picture framer.  Their son, Florentine, was born on January 25, 1997, and when he was six months old, they moved back to Watson to care for Dan's aging mother, Rose. Dan was employed with Sapphire Water until he retired in 2018. During his 27 years in Watson, Dan shared his talents at many community events such as Remembrance Day Services and for the residents at Quill Plains Lodge.  He also enjoyed performing with his friends in their band Fabco 4. Dan had a variety of talents and interests. He was a gifted artist who created and sold beautiful pieces of art that he would custom frame. Additionally, he was musically talented, composing and performing over 70 songs in his lifetime. Dan had a deep love for his hometown of Watson and greatly valued his family and friends. Dan will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife, Mary Lou (nee Ruddy) Schmitz; their son, Florentine Schmitz; his siblings and their families:  sister Sylvia (Larry) Boyko and family, Devon Boyko (Christine Asworth) and son Jacob and his mother Alison Harber, Joanna Boyko (Jeremy Lamy) and son Ronan Lamy; sister Marianne (Randy) Kwasnicia and family, Lindsay Kwasnicia and Braden Kwasnicia; sister-in-law Boni Schmitz and family, Tricia McEwen and her family Kristen McEwen and Jordan McEwen, Joel (Melissa) Schmitz and their family, Brandon Schmitz and Eleanora Schmitz, and Ryan Schmitz (Leah Treacy) and son Auren Schmitz.  He was predeceased by his father Florentine Schmitz (1981); mother Rosella (nee Nordick) Schmitz (2012); and by three brothers:  Leland Schmitz (2022), Jerome Schmitz (1970), and Chris Schmitz (1991).  The Prayer Service for Dan was held at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Watson, on Monday, September 9, 2024, at 7:30 p.m., presided by Brad Gaetz, who was also the scripture reader.  The Funeral Mass was offered at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church on Monday, September 10, 2024, at 1:30 p.m., celebrated by Fr. Francis Akomeah.  Others taking part were:  Maria Strasser, scripture reader; Reg Laybourne, intentions; and Kenton Remenda, eulogist. The urnbearers were Mary Lou Schmitz and Florentine Schmitz.  Music ministry was provided by organist Norma Weber, Nathan Gaudet, Kaylie Leblance and the Fabco 4.  Interment followed at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be directed to the Quill Plains Centennial Lodge Building Fund (c/o Quill Plains Health Foundation, P.O. Box 277, Watson, SK, S0K 4V0).
