This weekend Winnipegger's will be able to purge their houses and spaces of unwanted items that still have life left in them.

Winnipeg's giveaway weekend is taking place September 14 and 15 all day. Any reusable, unwanted items taking up space can be placed at the end of a person's driveway for people to take.

"Giveaway Weekend is not only about decluttering items, it’s about reducing the waste in our landfills by giving others the opportunity to reuse unwanted treasures," said Evan Duncan, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Water and Waste, and Environment. "I encourage residents to take time to go through their belongings and consider whether or not it can be rehomed. This is another way Winnipeggers can do their part to protect the environment."

The city of Winnipeg is encouraging people to be aware of a few things during the giveaway weekend:

  • Place unwanted household items at the curb on your front street
  • Label each item with a FREE sticker or sign
  • Store items out of sight that you don't want to give away
  • Remove leftover items from the curb by dusk on Sunday

The items people can giveaway that are of usable quality include books, DVDs, furniture, small appliances, sports equipment, toys, construction materials and kitchen goods. The items that should not be given away but rather disposed of properly include toilets, broken items, and anything unsafe.

For people interested in taking the free items from the ends of driveways, the city says take the following into consideration:

  • Take only the items at the curb marked "FREE"
  • Check all items closely to ensure they are safe and in good condition before you put them in your vehicle or bring them into your home
  • Don't walk or drive on private lawns or gardens
  • Don't discard any items on private property
  • Obey the traffic laws at all times (e.g., don't block traffic, park illegally, or block driveways with your vehicle), drive safely, and watch out for children
