Weyburn Mayor Marcel Roy announced this morning, via press release, that he will be seeking a third term as mayor.

“Over the recent years, Weyburn has made tremendous progress,” Roy said in the release. “From upgrading essential roads and water treatment infrastructure to the construction of a new school and hospital, we’ve kept public safety a priority, exercised fiscal responsibility, and supported economic stability. These accomplishments didn’t happen by accident; they were the result of hard work by Weyburn residents, common-sense policies and a commitment to putting our community first. However, we must remain vigilant. While we’ve set a strong course for Weyburn, it’s easy for misguided policies, no matter how well-intentioned, to lead us down a path we’ve seen before.”

Roy was first elected as mayor of Weyburn in 2016 when he defeated incumbent Debra Button with 57 percent of the vote. In 2020, Roy was re-elected with 56.4 percent of the vote, edging out Nick Coroluick and Bruce Croft.

Nominations for the municipal election officially open on September 29th. Election day is November 13th.

So far, Roy is the second person to announce they will be running for mayor. Earlier this summer, Jeff Richards announced his intention to run for mayor after serving two terms on the Weyburn City Council.
