Morden, Manitoba is set to host the Asham U18 Men’s and Women’s Provincial Curling Championships from January 1st to 5th, 2025. Ron Sugden, who is the Chair for this year’s event, shared insights into what makes the Asham U18 Championships a highlight on the provincial curling calendar.

According to Sugden, the event will feature 10 men’s and 10 women’s teams, all competing for the top spot and the opportunity to represent Manitoba at the national level in Saskatoon.

But hosting the Asham U18 Championships in Morden is not just an opportunity for the community to showcase its hospitality, but also a chance to inspire local youth. “Champions build champions. So big brothers out there curling, or big sisters, and little brothers or sisters see it happening, they’re going to want to curl. So that’s important for the community and just giving back to the community.”

Organizing an event on this scale requires many volunteers, and Sugden emphasized the need for community support, stating that they are looking for roughly 100 volunteers for various roles including finance, sponsorship, accommodations, admissions, timing, and hospitality. Potential volunteers are free to attend an information session on Thursday, September 12th from 7:00p.m. to 8:30p.m. at the Morden Curling Club. “We’re looking for people with the community lens of just coming out and helping out.”

For those interested in getting involved, Sugden encouraged reaching out through the Morden Curling Club’s website or Facebook page.

As the countdown to January begins, the anticipation continues to build, and the call for volunteers underscores the collective effort required to make this event a success.
