Another Bear Warning has been issued in Kananaskis County after a grizzly bear encounter.

According to Alberta Parks, a group of hikers was followed by a grizzly to the point where they had to use bear spray.

The warning was issued on Monday (Sept. 10) for the Commonwealth Creek area, including Mount Smuts, Mount Smutwood, and Birdwood Lakes.

It will remain in place until further notice.

They've included a few tips to avoid surprise bear encounters:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
  • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray.
  • Learn more about bear safety on our webpage or at WildSmart.

It's one of several bear encounters that's led to a closure or warning this year, including a grizzly attack that left a Calgary man with significant but not life-threatening injuries.

Alberta Parks is asking anyone who sees a bear to report the sighting to (403) 591-7755.
