Residents of Estevan are gearing up for the upcoming Civic Elections. Here are the important dates that you need to be aware of. (File photo)

Fall will be busy for the residents of Estevan, as the city prepares for another Civic Election. 

To help you prepare for the election season, here are the important dates ahead. 

September 23, 2024: The final Council meeting with the current City Council members

September 25, 2024: Call for Nominations

October 1, 2024: Mall-in ballot information will be available on the City's website

October 9, 2024: Nomination Day - The final day for all candidates to submit paperwork to confirm their intentions for a seat at City Hall. Prospective candidates have until 4:00 p.m. on this day to return their Nominations Package to the City Clerk's office to be added onto the ballot. 

Advanced Polls where residents can vote early if they can't make it to the actual election day:

  • October 29, 2024 from 4:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m: City Hall
  • October 30, 2024 from 4:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m: City Hall
  • November 2, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m: Estevan Fire Hall Drive Thru

Advance polling will also be available from November 2-9, but this block of time is normally dedicated to accessing the hospital and care homes for mobile polling. 

November 13, 2024: Election Day in Estevan. Eligible voters will elect a new mayor and 6 councillors to the City Hall. In the previous election, over 1,800 voters turned out to the polls. Church of God will be the main polling station again. Drive-thru polling stations will be set up at the Estevan Fire Hall and Suds Zone Car Wash


Voter's Criteria

The voting criteria remain the same from previous elections. Eligible voters must be: 

  • at least 18 years old on Election Day
  • a Canadian citizen
  • a resident of Saskatchewan for at least 6 months immediately preceding Election Day
  • either a.) a resident of the City of Estevan for at least 3 months immediately preceding Election Day OR b.) an owner of assessable land for at least 3 consecutive months immediately preceding Election Day

Voter ID requirements are available at the City of Estevan's election portal.


Plebiscite

There will be an additional question for residents to tick on the ballot this year. It'll be asking the public whether they'd support a new ice surface to be built in the city. The official wording has been vetted and confirmed by the City Clerk: 

"Would you support the construction of a third indoor ice facility in the City of Estevan?"

  • Yes
  • No
