The Weyburn Police Service is reminding people to stay away from old buildings that are in the process of being demolished after a call in the early morning hours last Saturday. The call came after a security company found two people who were inside the compound of the old ethanol plant, which is currently being demolished.

“The police attended, and they located two youth on location, and as a result, they were arrested for trespassing, and charged under the Trespass to Property Act,” explained Corporal Riley Doud with the WPS.

While there is curiosity that prompts people to explore old buildings, there can be consequences, added Doud.

“The building is being demolished at this point, so it is safe to be inside,” Doud explained, noting there is fencing around the building due to the safety risks. There is also the legal aspect.

“If they go inside there, people can be charged for trespassing.”

The call was one of 71 the Weyburn Police Service responded to last week, resulting in 20 charges in total. There were two charges under the Criminal Code, 15 under the Traffic Safety Act, one charge under the City of Weyburn bylaws, and two under the Trespass to Property Act.
