With the school year back in full force comes a reminder of safety precautions in school zones.

For some Grade 6 students at St. Michael's School, it means going the extra step by being on the safety patrol.

The Patrol ensures the students are safe while crossing the road and getting to their desired location.

Monique St. Onge, one of the students, says she feels happy to be a. part of it.

"I was excited to do this because my sister did it last year."

Avan Carter, another student, says that being a part of the Safety patrol is a big responsibility but is glad to take it on.

"Just knowing that you're gonna be helping kids get home safely was the one thing that I really liked."

Grade 6 student Keira Jackson explains a bit about what they do.

"In the afternoon, we all have to meet at the hallway, grab vests and stop signs, and I captain has to carry a big cone, and then we have to go out, and we have to like to patrol their set up, and we have to drop everybody off at a corner."

Another safety patrol member, Harley Wilson, says she loves safety patrol and explains why it is so important.

"It means that kids can be safe on their way home. So no one gets hurt, run over, gets hit, or anything."

These students will have one more safety session with the local police, and then their training will be complete. After that, they will be assisting the school throughout the year.
