Okotoks will join over 650 communities participating in the Terry Fox Run on Sunday, September 15.

This year's Okotoks run will be held in Sheep River Park, a new location from prior years.

Steve Preece is organizing this year's run, and though it's his first, he says he's had plenty of support.

"Sherry Heron, who was the previous director, had done a wonderful job. A dozen years, she did it, and it's tireless work. And the Terry Fox Foundation provides all the support I need to make the run effective."

He's participated in many runs in the past and worked for the Terry Fox Foundation at one point.

Like countless others, it's a close that's close to Preece's heart.

"I was really inspired by Terry, he's my personal hero. In my life, I've lost my mom and my best friend to cancer, so it was a pretty easy decision."

The Okotoks run will include a 1.5km loop, 3km, 5km, and 10km runs, and participants are welcome to go about it any way they like.

"You can run, walk, cycle, whatever you'd like. It's not a competitive run, it's a participative run. And of course, it's to raise money for cancer research, so we're hoping that participants will get sponsors and raise some money," says Preece.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the run is set for 10 a.m.

There will also be free hot dogs and water for participants, courtesy of Fountain Tire, Safeway, and Sobeys.

For anyone who can't make it to the run, donations can be made on the Terry Fox Foundation website.
