Winnipeg native, Samuel M-C is gearing up to release his debut album, Live Again.
The Christian jazz artist credits his parents for exposing him to different genres of music, "Being exposed to CHVN and listening to the songs and singing them with my parents really did develop a musical ear because I thought that'd be something I do all the time."
While he's always enjoyed music, he's been inspired to try out multiple instruments. "My dad was a DJ and I got exposed to a lot of records early on, a lot of 60s, 70s records, and I also got into some instruments like keyboard when I was very young. Eventually, I ended up getting my first guitar on Christmas and then bass and I really liked bass. I ended up going to saxophone because I ended up hearing a lot of jazz too in those records. And it just really inspired me to do saxophone."
To help listeners get familiar with his music, he said that he would describe the sound as, "Mostly contemporary Christian music or Gospel. There's of course a little bit of jazz sprinkled in because I'm a big fan of mostly fusion and jazz kind of songs, so I sprinkle a little bit of that in every so often."
He says that because of his interest in music production, he's excited to create music. "I've had a really big interest in how music is structured and how certain harmonies go together. I was a big harmony person."
He says the songs are based on chapters in James. "I think the main theme is just putting your trust in God and how God helped me to love myself. He helped me to express myself through music."
Several artists who play on CHVN have inspired him in his own music. "Listening to The Gospel Greats, I would listen all the time. Danny Gokey and Hillsong United too."
To stay up-to-date with his music, he says the best places to follow are his website, Instagram, and YouTube.
