The cougar that killed a house cat on an acreage south of Calgary is believed to no longer be in the area, according to Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services.

On Tuesday (Sept. 11), Jessica Low and her five-year-old daughter came face to face with a cougar right outside the back door of their house.

The animal was holding the body of their pet cat in its jaws, and though it eventually left, it returned to the same window hours later.

Low called Alberta Fish and Wildlife after both encounters and though officers responded both times, they were not able to locate the animal.

A statement from Alberta's Public Safety and Emergency Services says officers returned the day after along with a contract cougar houndsman with dogs, and still didn't find the cougar.

"Based on the search results, it is believed that the cougar has moved on from the immediate area where the incident occurred. However, our officers remain vigilant and are actively monitoring the situation to ensure the continued safety of residents," the statement partially reads.

Cougar sightings can be reported to 1-800-642-3800.
