Assaults and motor vehicle thefts saw notable increases in August, while overall calls for service have decreased year-to-date, according to the latest report from the Police Board.

Crimes Against Persons

Five sexual offences were reported in August, compared to two in the same month last year. However, the year-to-date (YTD) total is down, with 23 cases this year compared to 27 in 2023.

There were 11 assaults reported in August, up from six in August 2023. The YTD total has risen from 74 to 82.

One case of assault causing bodily harm was reported in August, bringing the YTD total for this offence to nine, up from four last year.

Overall, crimes against persons have increased by 12 per cent YTD, with 118 violations reported compared to 105 last year.

Crimes Against Property

Three residential break-ins were reported in August. The YTD total for residential break-ins is down, with 19 cases compared to 29 in 2023. One business and one other break-in were also reported.

One motor vehicle theft was reported in August, bringing the YTD total to 21. This marks a 200 per cent increase from seven cases last year.

Two cases of theft under $5,000 were reported in August, adding to a YTD total of 164 incidents, a 26 per cent increase from 130 cases in 2023.

Eight cases of mischief or willful damage were reported in August. This category has seen a one per cent increase YTD compared to last year.

Overall, crimes against property have risen by 16 per cent YTD.

Controlled Substances

Two drug trafficking violations were reported in August. The YTD total has decreased from 17 last year to 12 this year, a 29 per cent drop.

No possession violations were reported in August, and a 33 per cent YTD decrease has been noted.

Criminal Code Traffic Violations

Seven impaired driving or exceed-related offences were reported in August. The YTD total is 56, down from 79 at this time last year, representing a 29 per cent decrease.

There were four dangerous driving or other traffic violations reported in August. The YTD total has surged from 11 in 2023 to 85 this year.

Overall, traffic violations have decreased by 16 per cent YTD.

Calls for Service

YTD calls for service have decreased by 12.8 per cent, from 5,661 in 2023 to 4,939 this year.
