GOTTSELIG, Gabriel John

It is with much love that the family of Gabriel Gottselig announces his passing on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at the age of 103 years. He was predeceased by his parents Gabriel and Elizabeth, and siblings Alex, Joseph, Peter, Leo, Conrad, Paul, Kathy, Rose, Clare, Edna, Mary, and Margaret.

Gabe, as he was known by all, is survived by brothers Albert and John, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Born August 19, 1921, at his family’s homestead farm near Chamberlain, Gabe grew up as part of a lively, outgoing, and faith-filled family. He attended the nearby Vancise School, helping on the farm from an early age and developing a passion for farming that he held for the rest of life.

He farmed and shared a home with his younger brother Albert one mile south of the original Gottselig homestead, and later moved to Chamberlain. Over the decades, Gabe relished the never-ending work of a farmer. He slowed the pace a little in later years, only relinquishing when his body could finally no longer keep up with his drive and desire to be out in the field on the combine come fall.

Gabe was just shy of his 100th birthday when he decided it was time to leave his home of 40 years and move to a care home. The nearby facility at Craik was his home in final years, where nearby family would stop by regularly to visit and keep him apprised of the latest developments back on the farm.

Surviving two bouts of Covid at the age of 99 and 100 with relative ease, Gabe refused to leave the world behind until he was finally ready to do so. On a warm September morning during the height of harvest season, Gabe took a final breath in this world and moved on to the next.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK, on Wednesday, September 18 at 11:00 a.m.
