The 50th anniversary of the Cochrane Legion kicked of yesterday with the raising the Royal Canadian Legion flag at The Station.

Legionnaire Andy Bowyer got the honours of hoisting the colours, assisted by Sgt.-at-Arms Joey Cyr and Mayor Jeff Genung.

"It's the 50th anniversary of our Legion (building) this year, so this is a huge event for use," said Cyr during the brief ceremony.

"This is a big week for us, and we're looking forward to sharing a bit of our history as well as cherishing and treasuring our history and showing it to families all across Cochrane."

The 4th annual Legion Show literally starts with a bang this morning (Sept. 14) at 10 a.m. with the firing of one of two working cannons arriving from the John Bishop Collection. There may also be a nonworking cannon on display from the Bier War. You can expect the cannons to be fired on occasion through the show.

A Halifax engine from a Lancaster bomber will be fired up as well. That's scheduled to take place at both 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Bowyer says military equipment from different museums and collections will be on site and the coinciding 4x4 Show is a new addition. Inside there will be model displays and the Quilts of Valor will have a new quilt on display.

They do have a few more things up their sleeves and it's well worth dropping by the Legion Hall today between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
