The Independent Investigation Unit is investigating after a man died while in police custody.

Just before 4 a.m. on Sunday, members of the Winnipeg Police Service arrested a man in the 100 block of King Edward Street East on an outstanding warrant.

The man was brought to police headquarters at 245 Smith Street and turned over to the Central Processing Unit. He was medically cleared by a CPU paramedic and put in a holding room.

A few hours later, around 7:30 a.m., while conducting a scheduled arousal check, the man was found unresponsive in the holding room.

The onsite paramedic provided emergency medical care to the man before transporting him to hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has assumed responsibility for the investigation.
