It's election day for voters in the Elmwood-Transcona area.

A byelection was triggered in March after the NDP's Daniel Blaikie stepped down to take a job with Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew.

Blaikie and his father, the late Bill Blaikie, represented the area for years in the House of Commons.

The executive director of the Transcona Biz, Leila Dance, is running for the NDP, while electrician, Colin Reynolds, is running for the Conservatives. Meanwhile, Ian MacIntyre, a former teacher and president of the Manitoba Teachers' Society will run for the Liberals.

Elsewhere, Nicolas Geddert will run for the Green Party, Sarah Couture for the People’s Party of Canada and Zbig Strycharz is running for the Canadian Future Party.

Polls open at 8:30 a.m. and will close at 8:30 p.m.

To be eligible to vote, individuals must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Be at least 18 years old on election day
  • Have lived in Manitoba for at least six months immediately before election day
  • Live in the Tuxedo electoral division

Everyone must show ID to vote, either one piece of government-issued photo ID with your current address (such as a driver's license) or two others. The voter information card can be used as one of the two pieces of ID.
