The Weyburn Comprehensive School Eagles football team opened the 2024 regular season Friday night, as they travelled to Yorkton to take on the Yorkton Regional School Raiders. The Eagles, who are the defending 5A provincial champions, were looking to win in Yorkton for the first time in a number of years, and thanks to a strong defence, they would end up winning under the lights by a final of 24-3.

Yorkton would be the first to score when they got a field goal in the opening quarter. From there, the Eagles would take things over, starting with a play from Haydin Buehler.

Buehler would intercept a pass, and then run it back for a touchdown, putting WCS up 7-3. The lead would be extended when the Eagles recorded a safety, making it 9-3 Weyburn after the first half.

Weyburn would get a chance in the third to extend the lead but would come up short from within the Yorkton 10-yard line. This didn’t deter the Eagles, though, as an interception by Max Vennard would give Weyburn a second chance, and Nolan Uhren would find Buehler for a touchdown pass, putting Weyburn up 16-3.

In the fourth quarter, Weyburn added a rouge and then added another touchdown when Vennard returned an interception for a touchdown, giving Weyburn the 24-3 lead.

Defensively, the Eagles combined for six interceptions, and the Raiders were only able to put up the three points on the board after being kept outside the red zone on the Weyburn half of the field all game.

The Eagles will get set for their next game, Thursday night under the lights at Leibel Field in Regina against the Balgonie Griffins. The home opener will be Tuesday, September 24th, when they welcome the Peacock Tornadoes out of Moose Jaw to Darold Kot Field.
