Twelve firefighters responded to a vehicle fire east of MacGregor in the early hours of Saturday.

Crews were dispatched to a fire on Highway 1 at 2:48 a.m. on September 14. The blaze involving a semi-dolly was extinguished and cleaned up quickly. Firefighters were back in service at 4:45 a.m.

MacGregor Fire Chief Chris Leckie tells PortageOnline it was a mechanical failure on the dollies pulling the second semi-trailer when it malfunctioned and caused the brakes and tires to catch fire.

"It didn't take very long to extinguish the fire," says Leckie. "Crews were pretty quick at knocking that out. Due to the circumstances, they didn't want any of the fire to spread to the trailers."

According to Leckie, the driver's rapid response in disconnecting the trailers limited the damage that could have been caused.

"If he had not acted on disconnecting the trailers, the damage and the fire would have been much more extensive and time-consuming. It was quick thinking and saved us a lot of time and manpower for that."
