The 48th Annual United Way Estevan Telethon is set to take place on October 18 and 19, promising another exciting year of community involvement, entertainment, and fundraising. Running for 33 consecutive hours, the Telethon will once again bring together Estevan’s residents to raise money for vital programs, services, and agencies that support the community.

Mark Pettitt, this year's United Way Estevan President, expressed excitement about the event, stating that the Telethon is designed to involve everyone in the community, from young children to seniors.

"We're going to have some great entertainment. We're going to have lots of fundraising, and because this is a community event, we involve everyone," Pettitt said. "We have little kids younger than kindergarten, right through up to the high school, and then into our senior population, who either come down and entertain or they volunteer, or they come down, make their donation, and donate bid items."

This year’s theme, YOU ARE THE COMMUNITY, reflects the inclusive nature of the Telethon. As Pettitt explained, "We don't hire a magical crew to come in and set up and do everything. It's you, it's the entertainer, it's the volunteer, it's the donor, everybody."

Long-Standing Tradition of Success

47th UWE Total

The United Way Estevan Telethon has a rich history of community support, consistently surpassing its fundraising goals. Last year’s event raised over $350,000, exceeding expectations and making a significant impact on the organizations it supports. Over the past 47 years, the Telethon has established itself as one of Estevan’s most important annual events, not only for the money it raises but also for the sense of unity it fosters within the community.

The Telethon funds 11 member agencies, including the Canadian Red Cross, Envision Counselling and Support Centre, and Estevan Diversified Services Inc., among others. These agencies provide essential services to residents, ranging from healthcare and counseling to literacy programs and resources for people with disabilities. In addition, the Estevan United Way supports several Community Impact Projects, such as the Day of Caring, Hillcrest Breakfast Club, and ECS Challenge Day, to name a few.

Community Impact Strategy

United Way Estevan is also developing a broader Community Impact Strategy aimed at deepening its engagement with the local community. Executive Director Heidi Hesselink explained that this initiative focuses on three main areas: collaboration, education, and connection.

"In addition to our fundraising at the telethon and supporting member agencies and Community Impact partners, we've been looking at what it would be like to have a Community Impact Strategy that would enhance Estevan," said Hesselink. "One of the focuses is encouraging collaboration in the community, supporting the agencies, and educating people about the incredible work these organizations do."

The strategy emphasizes collaboration, aiming to build stronger partnerships between local agencies, businesses, and individuals. By working together, United Way and its partners can more effectively share resources and ideas, ensuring that community needs are met in a more coordinated way.

Another key focus is education, with the goal of raising awareness about the work these agencies do. "We want the community to understand more about what our member agencies offer and how important their services are," Hesselink added. This involves using platforms like social media to better promote the agencies and inform the public about how they can support them.

Finally, connection is about bringing people together, whether through events like the telethon or smaller efforts such as the Day of Caring. The United Way aims to foster a sense of belonging and shared responsibility, ensuring that residents feel engaged and empowered to contribute to the community’s well-being.

Entertainment and Activities

This year’s Telethon will feature a variety of entertainment acts that showcase local talent. From singers and dancers to other performers, the 33-hour broadcast promises something for everyone. In addition to live performances, the Telethon will include raffles, including the popular quilt raffle generously donated by the Hearts and Hands Quilt Guild, and a silent auction with a variety of bid items.

Volunteers play an essential role in making the event a success, with opportunities to help before, during, and after the Telethon. Hesselink encouraged community members to get involved, whether through donations, volunteering, or contributing raffle items.

"We would love as many volunteers as possible at the Telethon," she said. "If you need to get in touch, please contact the office at 306-634-7375 or check out our website. There's also a link on how to volunteer there."

Additionally, those interested in donating to the raffle or auction are encouraged to reach out to Jacie Vandermeulen at (306) 421-3900 to arrange item contributions.

How to Watch and Donate

The Estevan United Way Telethon will be broadcast live on AccessNow TV, AccessNow App, and online. Community members are encouraged to tune in and follow along throughout the event. A live link will be provided on the United Way Estevan website and social media channels closer to the event date.

For those looking to make donations, there are several options. During the Telethon, donations can be made by e-transfer to etransfer@unitedwayestevan.com. Donations can also be made in person by visiting the Estevan Legion on Telethon Day.

With its rich tradition, extensive community support, and exciting new plans for the future, the 48th Annual United Way Estevan Telethon promises to be another resounding success. The event continues to exemplify the spirit of community and the difference that individuals can make when they come together for a common cause.
