Foothills theatre collective, the Erratic Players, is looking for an Indigenous actor to join their ranks for an upcoming production.
They are producing a play about the legendary Lost Lemon Mine, rumoured to be hidden somewhere in the southwest section of the province.
"This show is called 'The Raiders of the Lost Lemon Mine,'" explained the play's director and one its producers, Katie Fournell. "And this show is about the lost Lemon Mine legend, which many people in Alberta will know, but some people don't. There is a lost mine, or a gold vein, somewhere in the Rocky Mountains and there is a legend of where it is. It was discovered by a man named John Lemon."
The show plays on that legend and the search for the lost mine.
"Our play is about a couple of archeologists and prospectors who are gonna go and find it and the clues have led them to the Twin Cities Saloon. And what they have discovered is a bunch of puzzles that will lead them to the location of the lost Lemon mine," Fournell says.
She adds that the audience will participate in the play and help solve the puzzles that will influence the story as it plays out.
Logan Coutts, producer and actor in The Raiders of the Lost Lemon Mine, says that there are people out there who believe they know where the lost mine is.
"And that's the joy about it, is there are some people that think they know where it is, but they'll keep hush-hush. So, that's the whole fun of the show is, Does it actually exist? Will people be able to find it?" said Coutts.
They are currently looking for one more person to round out the cast.
Fournell says they are looking for a comedic Indigenous actress who is 18 years old and over.
"The age does not matter," Fournell says.
The character they are casting for is the descendant of one of the Indigenous people who had knowledge of the Lemon Mine.
"As a descendant of an Indigenous person, it feels more appropriate to definitely have an Indigenous actor in the role so that that particular story is being told with the aid of a voice that is more akin to the legend on the Indigenous side of it," Fournell says.
She adds that while the story of the lost mine is more of a colonial story, there are Indigenous influences that play an important role in the narrative, and they want to make sure that part is included when they perform their play.
For those who wish to audition for the role, Fournell is asking the actresses to send them a video of themselves doing a comedic monologue.
Rehearsals begin on January 6 and opening night is January 22.
Portions of the ticket sales will go towards the actors.
Tickets for the Raiders of the Lost Lemon Mine go on sale on October 1.
