On Thursday morning, the Weyburn Police Service were called to the scene of a collision in the parking lot of Southeast College. One vehicle was pulling into the lot from King Street, the other was travelling north through the lot. The vehicles collided, causing enough damage for both vehicles to be towed away, however, neither of the drivers were injured.

Sergeant Shane St. John says typically parking lot incidents only result in fender benders. He says it's important to yield to the right of way.

“You always yield to the right, but it depends on the situation because in a parking lot a person could be turning into the lot and not yielding to the right of way. You would get a ticket. It's a little different as it's in the parking lot offense. It's a little less money, but you still get points off your license.”

Sgt. St. John says it's important to use the driving lanes in the lots and maintain a speed under ten kilometers per hour.

“Don't cut through empty lanes and pay attention. Besides hitting a vehicle, that's where you could hit a pedestrian as well. Use a common sense approach of using the lanes lined up in a parking lot, reducing the speed, and keeping your head on a swivel.”

The Weyburn Police Service responded to 85 calls for service from September 9th through 15th. A total of 39 charges resulted, four were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, 14 under the Traffic Safety Act, and one for failure to attend court.
