While there is just under a week officially left in summer, summer-like conditions may be ending sooner than the start of fall on Sunday.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Weyburn and the surrounding area as the temperature is expected to climb into the high 20s today, but starting tonight, things could start to get very autumnal.

“We’ve got a wetter period coming up for most of Saskatchewan, I would say,” noted Natalie Hasell, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. After some rain moved through the area last week, another round of showers is expected in the coming days, beginning with the possibility of thunderstorms later today.

The system that is responsible for bringing the chance of storms is moving in from the United States and could bring upwards of 50 millimetres of rain to the Weyburn area. To the southwest, there could be even more rain, with the thunderstorm outlook showing a potential for 75 millimetres of precipitation, with a chance of hail and extreme wind gusts.

“I’m not saying you won’t get something of a downpour, but if you do, it will be pretty small, and probably not very widespread in terms of thunderstorm coverage,” Hasell clarified.

After the system passes through tonight and tomorrow, things will start to cool off significantly, with Environment Canada forecasting temperatures dipping into the teens, and possibly cooler, come the weekend.
